Beau Notes
On Her Terms
Beau Hollis

It was an exercise in trust
We had to learn to take our turn
And give ourselves up

When she met me I was blindfolded
Walking in the park
I was in the dark
But her eyes were wide open
She could see so far
As she led me by the arm
I guess she felt a spark

It was on her terms
She wanted me to meet her
'fore I could even see her
And it was on her terms
It was her hand to play
She could have walked away
But she came up to me first
It started on her terms

She would show up at my door
At random times and come inside
And stay till four.

And we would talk for hours
Go walking in the rain
Or play some silly games
But she would go home
To a like that was unknown to me
A life would not show to me
She would not let me see.

It was on her terms
One minute my phone’s ringing
The next she’s got me singing to her
And it was on her terms
She never called me in advance
So that she never lost the chance
To escape if things got worse
She kept things on her terms

She said she wasn’t looking for
The next best thing around
[She] said she could wait for
Me to come back into to town
I guess in the end
That was harder than it sounded
She may not have been looking
But I’m pretty sure she found it
Yes she did

'Cause we were the best of friends
We’d talk all night about our lives
Until the day when

She suddenly stopped
Picking up the phone
I guess she’d rather be alone
Or maybe not alone but
At the very least
Not alone with me
That was plain to see

It was on her terms.
To hard to let me know
So she just let me go
It was on her terms
Words were never spoken
My heart in silence broken
Because she couldn’t find the words
To end things any way but on her terms

Maybe I should cast some blame
Or better yet just get upset
That things are not the same

But then I would think of
All the things she gave
That I cannot repay
And even though it ended
In a big fat mess
And caused all kinds of stress
I still feel blessed

It ended on her terms
But in the end she earned that
I had to love to learn that
It was on her terms
That’s the way it had to be
For it to end happily for her
That’s all I wanted

Two broken hearts would have been worse
And even though it hurts
It’s better mine than hers
And I’m just glad it ended on her terms

It was an exercise in trust
That’s all it ever was
